There are five main species of wood boring beetle in the UK and all of them can cause significant damage to timber structure. Usually the first sign we see are those tell-tale woodworm holes, but this is actually created by the final stage of the insect’s life – when the woodworm larvae pupates into an adult winged beetle and bores out of the wood. Prior to that the larvae will have spent usually 2-3 years inside the timber causing damage. This is why when you get an active woodworm infestation, all the timbers in that area need treating regardless of whether they are showing signs of flight holes. It is highly likely that there will be larvae in wood not yet showing such signs. Treatment for most wood boring beetle infestations is carried out using a powerful permethrin-based insecticide which needs to soak into the wood to create a layer of permethrin that puts a stop to all life stages, although things are a bit different with death watch beetle which spend longer inside the wood. The wood needs to be able to ‘take’ the treatment, so painted or varnished wood is not suitable for such treatment. We have a specialist division dealing with wood boring beetle infestations professionally – for further advice see www.heritagetimbercare.com.
