Silverfish are mainly nocturnal insects that like a bit of damp. They have no real defence mechanism against predators like jumping, flying or biting, and their only real weapon is their speed. You often find them in bathrooms and kitchens, and although they are not known as spreaders of pathogens, they are annoying in those environments. Often silvery-blue in colour, the adults are about 12mm in length and they have long frontal antenna. They can eat hair, paper, clothing, carpets, wallpaper and glue and are believed to be one of the oldest primitive insects alive with fossils of them dating back over 300 million years. Treatment can involve combining traps with ‘crack and crevice’ treatments with insecticidal sprays with a level or residuality alongside powder treatments. Don’t mop or hoover within a week of applying these to allow for the residuals to have some effect. Dealing with the damp or any leaks will also help.
